Folklife West & Folklife Traditions Journal to be published separately
Folklife West & Folklife Traditions Journal to be published separately
- Folklife West - news as before, but no longer including Journal.
- Folklife Traditions Journal - twice yearly, November and March.
- Subscriptions to include both magazines - no change - £18 year UK, etc.
I can't get both Journal and Folklife news & ads out on time.
As the magazine has grown, last time 56 pages - equivalent to 112 pages in an A5 magazine - too big to edit it all for publication date.
We had planned to publish separately from 2024, but have had to change this issue in order to get Folklife West out on time.
Due to very time-consuming not-life-threatening health matters and unavoidable admin changes for Folklife: (1) website directory-entry forms became unreliable; (2) email forwarder changed, see belo
New email forwarder MailerLite

Our 1st email, via MailerLite, follows in the next 10 minutes. If you do not receive it, please email me, sam@folklife.uk
2 MailerLite requires sllghtly different format, so options for "Area" changed
Was "country" eg "USA" or "English region" eg "England - West Midlands".
Now for all "country" (= incl. England); and then only for England "region".
We continue to also hold your data on MailChimp for now (still using it for now eg till we sort out new forms).

DIRECTORY:
NEW --- shanty singers webpage www.folklife-directory.uk/perf-shanty Your free listing welcome ! |
As usual ... print magazines -- deadline 20 July
for 1 Sept Folklife West & Folklife Traditions Journal no deadline for online-only INTERNATIONAL FOLK NEWS and for online DIRECTORY entries. Generally, despite some closures, folk activity is recovering well. Thus Ruthin AllStyles Music, North Wales, emailed "so nice to see the function room at The Feathers once again filled with familiar faces and beginning to feel like it did pre-lockdown. In fact, we were hard-pressed to fit everybody . . . 19 performers". Locally, in May, Upton Folk Festival, Worcs, felt like pre-Covid days - excellent festival and excellent attendance! and Somers Traditional Folk Club, Worcester, has risen from averaging 15--20 to 20--29. And we hope likewise in your area, too. So, with more live folk activity, we've changed our Directory Performers webpages. Previously, arranged by areas (made sense when folk weren't travelling very far or sometimes staying home). Webpages are now arranged by type: folk groups, duos, solo, and webpages for particular activities - so a new shanty singers webpage, a choirs webpage, etc. ikewise dance & spoken word categories. Sadly, our boxes [from website-providers Weebly] to "Send News" & to send "Directory Updates" stopped working for a week. No use if not reliable, so all webpages changed to list of what to send (very time-consuming to set up but done now!) |
I am amazed that some venues only have FaceBook, and no webpage to tell you the basics . . .
So I was pleased to receive June-July Folk London, with Editor James Eagle's article "Online promotion: 10 top tips for confused club organisers", which says Forget Facebook (or at least don't rely entirely on it), Get a website (a stable place to point your social media to), Nothing beats an email list, and lots of detailed useful stuff. I'd actually been thinking of writing something similar, but James is far more knowledgeable. Recommended, buy it, www.folklondon.co.uk -- Sam

FOLK FESTIVALS international (not based/organised from UK), live & virtual & both [more welcome; we need a minimum 3 weeks notice]
ØØ USA: Sep 23 -24 Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival http://pmffest.org/
Only four months till the festival! Last month we told you about our headliners: John Roberts, the Johnson Girls, and Steve Turner. Read on for some more exciting names—and get ready for the festival on the 23rd and 24th of September.
Start thinking about our SONGWRITING COMPETITION. Have you written a maritime song, or would you like to? Enter our songwriting competition. One song per competitor; lyrics must be original, and while original tunes have a better chance of winning, traditional melodies are acceptable. E-mail an MP3 to nicknoble<at>wicn.com before August 1 to enter. The winner will be invited to perform their entry at the concert on Saturday the 23rd of September.
We are also looking for entries in our LOGO CONTEST. We liked the 2022 logo so much that we are using it this year, as well — but we will announce the 2024 logo at the 2023 festival. Your submission should be an easily-reproduced graphic image that evokes the spirit of PMFF. The image should either have no words, or include “Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival,” “2024,” “pmffest.org,” and/or “Portsmouth, New Hampshire.” In other words—a logo we can use for advertising the festival. The winner will receive a gift card as a thank-you. For “the fine print,” drop us a line.
And finally… MORE PERFORMERS! So many wonderful names to choose from… how about, Bob Zentz, Castlebay, and Jerry Bryant? And… Ken Schatz and Nicole Singer? It is getting late here at PMFF HQ, so we will just say stay tuned for more performer bios, or look them up, and either way, prepare to be delighted.

Dear Music Lover
On Sunday 09 July– yes, next Sunday – I've been asked to sing and play solo at the Three Kings in Church End, Hanley Castle from 9 – 11 pm.
Postcode is WR8 0BL.
It will be an evening of well-known song, some of it humourous, nearly all of it cheerful, covering a range of genres I know how to play. There are plenty of opportunities to join in the singing, but it's not obligatory.
There is no entry charge, and the Three Kings has its own special charm. The beer is much appreciated by real ale enthusiasts.
I'd love to see you there.
Best wishes, Alasdair
🄵 Herefs: Bromyard's FOLK IN THE FOYER at the Conquest Theatre.

Contemporary folk music with a twist of bluegrass and world music played with outstanding acoustic guitar and ukulele. Karen Macleod, a solo acoustic artist is an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist and singer who plays an eclectic mix of country blues, ragtime, American folk and bluegrass songs. She spent two years living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia before hoboing across the USA on freight trains!
Friday 11th August: Mike Silver. A force to be reckoned with, celebrating nearly 60 years recording, taking his music far and wide through many European countries and further to the Falkland Islands, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. At 76, Mike is still gigging and touring with as much skill and enthusiasm as ever. ‡‡ THE SIDMOUTH SEASIDE STOMPERS CEILIDH BAND WORKSHOP
A fantastic opportunity for young musicians to make music during the first week of August.
Young people (8 years and over) who play any musical instrument will have a great time in this series of daily workshops. Workshops lead to a special opportunity to play as a festival ceilidh band.
Ray Langton leads the workshops along with a team of talented tutors (Team STOMPIT!) who help and encourage players throughout the week. There is expertise in: guitar, brass, percussion, woodwind squeezebox, strings and anything else is also welcome. The dance music will include a mixture of jigs, reels, polkas and hornpipes.
Participants must have their own instruments and be able to play a number of tunes from music or by ear (approximately Grade 2 standard). Music will be provided and parts for all instruments and all abilities will be available.

Note to Article: Married to a Mermaid, Tune & Song by Charles Menteith
References: (2) See Folktracks 30-210, John Foreman, Music Hall Songs or Reality records RY 1004, JOHN FOREMAN the ‘ouses in between. Charles adds:---- Peter Kennedy spelled it Folktrax. So the reference to the CD is: Folktrax FTX-331 - The Londoners. You can see more about it at https://folktrax-archive.org/menus/cassprogs/331.htm The quoted 30-210, John Foreman, Music Hall Songs is probably the number of the tapes †, which I have a copy of, though I can't find it. It only includes Foreman, while the CD includes also Fred Luckhurst. Besides, the 30 refers to the duration of the tape. So the reference to the CD is: Folktrax FTX-331 - The Londoners † confirmed, from PK's tape insert sheet (we used to sell his tapes) - Eds. |

Canada Cod Liver Oil
From Rick Polly's latest emailed newsletter, 30/04/2023:
Cod Liver Oil provided much needed essential nutrients for the diets or early and impoverished Newfoundland, where fruits and vegetables were hard to grow or buy. This 1900 picture of my Great-grandfather, Henry Jones, shows a barrel where the cod livers would be placed, with the Cod Liver Oil slowly rising to the top. Given how noxious and rank it was, one wonders how it was ever discovered to be beneficial when consumed. But potent it was, as told in this 19th Century Newfoundland dance tune about the benefits and perils of too much of Dr. John’s “Cod Liver Oil.”

FOLK FESTIVALS international (not based/organised from UK), live & virtual & both [more welcome; we need a minimum 3 weeks notice]
ØØ USA: Sep 23 -24 Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival http://pmffest.org/
OUR HEADLINERS: John Roberts, the Johnson Girls, and Steve Turner! We are so excited to have these fantastic performers back in Portsmouth.
John Roberts has been enthralling audiences for quite a while, on his own, in a duo with the dearly missed Tony Barrand, with Nowell Sing We Clear, and more recently working with Debra Cowan. His wonderful voice, concertina, and banjo have been a highlight of PMFF several times before, and for those of you who are new to our community, you are in for a real treat.
The Johnson Girls bring spectacular vocal harmonies and powerful energy to some of our favorite sea songs, as well as bringing some more obscure songs into the spotlight. Like John, they’ve graced our stage before, and we are always happy to have them back.
Steve Turner is, perhaps, a bit less well-known than these other two acts, but we are hoping to change that. HIs virtuosic concertina playing and evocative voice are a true delight, and while he has been part of our festival previously, we are extremely pleased to bring him to our main stage for the first time.

Ceilidh really means really having a great time, and Cataclews — with their mix of Cornish, English and Irish music — are the band to deliver this.
They did use proud at the end of February, playing to a packed and dancing town hall when we repurposed that money-raising event to help the victims of the Turkey/Syria Earthquake.
This time it is all about us, as well as about having a great night out.
So polish off those dancing shoes, practice your dos-si-do-ing in the mirror, get a ticket and see you at Wadebridge Town Hall, Sat 3rd June from 7.30pm. Bar available. Details/book www.cornwallfolkfestival.com then go to "June 3rd ceilidh" page.

🄵 Crows - Mick Ryan, Paul Downes, Pete Harris and Dave Bordewey at 🄵 The Fleece at Bretforton on Thursday 25th May in the Barn 7:30
Tickets available from the Fleece /fleecyfolk website https://thefleeceinn.co.uk/events/fleecey-folk-crows/
‘Crows’ were a popular feature of the folk scene from 1978 to 1988. The combination of four strong voices and expert musicianship gave them a simultaneously unique yet broad appeal. With the sad death of Ralph Jordan, in 2013, previously unreleased radio recordings were discovered. A ‘new’ album (‘Time To Rise’ Wildgoose Records), was released in 2016, and enthusiastically reviewed (‘All the songs are really inspiring….spellbinding’ Mick Tems ‘Folk Wales’).
Two of the original line-up remain in the revived band, Mick Ryan and Dave Bordewey .
Crows are now joined by Pete Harris (vocals, guitar and bouzouki) who worked in an acclaimed duo with Mick for many years, adding a unique blend of power, warmth and harmony to the band's vocal mix. Dave Bordewey adds his astonishing high harmony lines accompanying many songs on the fiddle and Mando-cello . Finally, the inimitable Paul Downes on guitar, banjo, Mando-cello and harmonies, takes over from Ralph. All four are well known and highly respected performers in their own right.
For the new ‘Crows’, it is very clearly ‘Time To Rise’!
